The 2025 outlook for the commodity markets remains positive as gold, silver, and platinum are projected to surge in value. Gold recorded a phenomenal rise in 2024 as it printed a 27% surge, a high after its stellar 2010 run. Leading commodity strategists forecast that the natural metals sector could boom this year due to increased tariff threats from Trump.

Geopolitical turmoil and growing trade tensions between the US and other developing countries could make institutional funds turn towards gold, silver, and platinum. These assets act as a safety net and a hedge against the growing global market uncertainties. The optimism stems after Trump openly threatened to increase tariffs on goods entering the US if they fail to obey his demands.

“Investors are optimistic about gold and silver for 2025 because they are so pessimistic on geopolitics and government debt,” said Adrian Ash, director of research at BullionVault, to CNBC. He also emphasized the yellow metal’s role will act as a hedge against the growing market risk.

Leading financial strategists from JP Morgan also expect gold, silver, and platinum prices to rise in 2025. The analysts wrote that if the US policies become “more disruptive,” institutional money will flow into the natural metals sector. The elevated trade tensions could stall economic growth in the US as developing countries could also retaliate against increased tariffs.

“Both silver and platinum have strong underlying deficit fundamentals. And we think a catch-up trade later in 2025, once base metals find firmer footing, could be quite potent,” JP Morgan analysts noted. If gold rallies in 2025, the stock market could decline, making leading stocks shed most of their value. Trump’s tariff threats act as a double-edged sword that could cut the US market’s prospects if things go wrong.
