The Group of Seven (G7) industrialized countries are set to agree to an artificial intelligence (AI) code of conduct on October 30th, Reuters reports. The voluntary guidance aims to foster the responsible development and use of AI worldwide.
The 11-point code was drafted by G7 leaders in September. It offers suggested actions for organizations building advanced AI, like foundation models and generative systems.
The code advocates public transparency reports on system capabilities, limitations, and potential for misuse. It also recommends developers implement robust security controls.

G7 code promotes safe usage of artificial intelligence
The G7 code promotes using AI in “safe, secure, and trustworthy” ways to best harness benefits while addressing risks. It comes as G7 countries grapple with properly governing emerging technologies like AI.
The G7 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, the US, and the EU. Digital and tech ministers from the nations discussed priorities like responsible artificial intelligence development during an April meeting.
The code follows other AI governance efforts, such as the landmark EU AI Act passed in June. On October 26th, the UN also launched an advisory committee to provide guidance on AI regulation.
With advanced artificial intelligence infiltrating more aspects of society, the G7 code signifies that industrial powers acknowledge the need for some baseline principles to steer the technology responsibly.
