Apple has made a new acquisition as part of its artificial intelligence initiative, purchasing Canada-based AI company DarwinAI. The iPhone creator reportedly made the acquisition earlier this year, and now DarwinAI’s employees are joining Apple’s artificial intelligence division, according to Bloomberg.
DarwinAI has worked with multiple companies to produce innovative AI technology and inspect components during the manufacturing process. The company previously worked with multiple industries, but now will dedicate all its resources to tech giant Apple. One of DarwinAI’s signatures in the industry is making artificial intelligence systems more compact, yet just as fast. Apple will likely look to incorporate this technology into its devices moving forward, increasing AI capabilities.
Alexander Wong, an AI researcher at the University of Waterloo who helped build DarwinAI, has joined Apple as a director in its AI group as part of the acquisition. When asked about the deal, Apple only disclosed that it “buys smaller technology companies from time to time” but won’t discuss its plans.
