In a consequential development for the BRICS nation, Brazil has ended all diplomatic relations with Israel. Indeed, a Reuters report notes that Brazil’s President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has opted to recall his ambassador to Isreal. The decision follows strained relations after comments made by da Silva regarding the ongoing war in Gaza.
Specifically, Lula da Silva had previously vocalized his perceived similarities between Isreal’s war against Hamas and World War II Nazi genocide, the report notes. Subsequently, the Brazilian ambassador was reprimanded by Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz. Thereafter, the South American nation has opted to recall that ambassador Monday.

The decision was made after conflict emerged between Brazil’s ambassador and Israel’s Foreign Minister. Specifically, that had stemmed from comments made by Lula da Silva himself. Within those statements, he made controversial connections between Isreal’s Gaza War and World War II Nazi Germany.
“What is happening in the Gaza Strip with the Palestinian people has no parallel in other historical moments,” Lula stated. “In fact, it did exist when Hitler decided to kill the Jews,” he added when speaking at an African Union summit.
On Monday, Israel’s Katz stated that Lula da Silva was no longer welcome in the country. Specifically, he called da Silva “persona non grata” in the country until he took back his comments. Subsequently, da Silva responded by terminating its diplomatic relations with the nation.
