The ChatGPT AI (artificial intelligence) chatbot has taken the world by storm. Many of us are aware of the platform’s incredible capabilities. In December 2022, Google’s Gmail creator, Paul Buccheit, claimed that the chatbot might overtake the search engine giant in two years.

The chatbot was developed by OpenAI, an American firm founded in 2015 by Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, and others. Although ChatGPT is bringing new horizons to the search engine game, many aren’t aware of how the chatbot works. With that being said, let’s find out…

How does ChatGPT work?

While the chatbot gained popularity around the end of 2022, most of the underlying technology has been in use for much longer but with far less attention. The ChatGPT model is based on GPT-3 (or, more specifically, GPT-3.5), which stands for “Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3.” Following GPT-2 and GPT, GPT-3 is the third version of the GPT line of AI models. Although the earlier model iterations are still effective, GPT-3 and the improved GPT-3.5 iteration are far more effective.

The GPT language model is trained to utilize data from the internet. Moreover, its goal is to produce human language text when given a prompt. The model was trained using scraps from every corner of the internet, including Reddit, Twitter, and Wikipedia. To reduce damaging, untruthful, or biased outputs, the designers apply a specific approach called Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF).

The model can respond to queries after being given a substantial amount of text downloaded from the internet. Its precision, though, won’t be sufficient. The model is quizzed by human instructors, who comment on the best response for each question. After that, it uses input to develop its capacity to reply to inquiries more precisely and in line with what a human would say. This is how ChatGPT can produce replies that seem human and are typically correct, logical, and engaging.

Future of the AI chatbot

Microsoft has made significant investments in the chatbot and is reportedly integrating the technology into its Bing search engine. Moreover, according to AI researchers, Bing could be able to outperform Google’s long-standing supremacy by providing users with a better search experience.

There is no escaping from AI. The digital future will be guided by the intelligence of machines. Furthermore, there are reports about AI being able to answer some of the most intriguing questions about human origins, consciousness, and the nature of reality. Regardless, it seems pretty clear that humans will be guided by their AI creations in the very near future.
