State Money And Political Backing For Terafab Texas
Public funding ties closely into the Elon Musk Terafab construction plan and into the SpaceX chip factory itself. The company filed eight tax incentive applications with local school districts, seeking to freeze maintenance and operations taxes near 48 percent of appraised value for a decade per phase, and it also wants the state to cover the difference through the Texas JETI program.
The filing stated:
Absent the limitation, the project IRR would fall below the minimum investment threshold, and competing jurisdictions (e.g., Arizona) would present a more favorable after-tax return, in which case the project would likely be relocated outside Texas.
Governor Greg Abbott said:
The first phase of the Terafab project represents a capital investment of more than $16.8 billion and will create 3,000 new jobs.

SpaceX and the governor’s office have not answered requests for further comment, and at the time of writing nobody has set a confirmed date for when construction will actually break ground. The SpaceX chip factory, also known simply as Terafab Texas, still counts as one of the largest single building projects announced anywhere in the world this year, and it is one that Musk clearly wants people to keep watching.
