According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fortune, and Mark Wahlberg’s media production company, Unrealistic Ideas are planning a documentary on crypto exchange FTX and Binance. The documentary will focus on the relationship between the founders of the two firms. FTX chief Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) is currently in US custody, undergoing trial for his role in the exchange’s collapse.

The documentary will look into the personal relationship between SBF and Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ). The project mentions that the two established themselves as leading personalities in the cryptocurrency industry. They formed distinctive alliances that simultaneously positioned them as rivals and partners. Zhao focused on a more austere strategy for establishing Binance. Meanwhile, SBF sought a high profile for FTX that depended on celebrity endorsements and political power.

Moreover, when FTX was in freefall, Binance announced plans to buy the exchange but withdrew after conducting due diligence on the deal. SBF recently charged Zhao with mounting a protracted attempt to damage his business, including FTX’s sister firm Alameda Research.

Archie Gips, one of the founders of Unrealistic Ideas, said,

“The story of SBF and CZ has captivated the imagination of people everywhere. What I’m most excited about is the phenomenal exclusive access we have to dynamic storytellers who were literally a part of Shakespearean-like drama as it unfolded.”

Meanwhile, Fortune editor-in-chief, Alyson Shontell stated,

“We’re unbelievably excited to pair the award-winning journalistic resources of Fortune with Unrealistic Ideas’ well-known storytelling prowess. The tumultuous relationship between SBF and CZ has played out to a certain extent in articles and on Twitter, but this definitive documentary will give people a 360-degree, personal look at the entire FTX saga.”

Other projects around FTX

There are other projects regarding SBF and FTX in development, including a documentary by nonfiction studio XTR. The Information and Vice Media are working on another one as well. Additionally, Moneyball, The Big Short, and Flash Boys author Michael Lewis proposed the film and television rights to an upcoming novel based on SBF.

The FTX fall of November 2022 was one for the history books. Therefore it is not surprising that big production houses want to make films and documentaries around it. As of now, we do not have the release dates for the documentary, however, the idea has gotten many in the cryptocurrency community excited.
