Thomas Kaplan, the Chairman of the Electrum Group, a New York-based private investment advisory firm, gave out a bold price prediction on gold. The Chairman forecasted that gold could rise 10 times higher from its current value. He compared today’s scenario to 1987, when prices skyrocketed from then on after experiencing a crash.

“I can see gold going to $30,000, $40,000 and $50,000 without a problem,” Kaplan said to Kitco News. “Seeing gold go up another tenfold from here, to me, is not just likely, but inevitable,” he said. The XAU/USD index is trading at the $4,500 level on Friday, at the time of his bold prediction. Gold prices need to rise nearly 1,000% for his prediction to become a reality.

When asked if his price prediction on gold is focused on the short-term or long-term, Kaplan explained that it doesn’t matter, as prices will shoot up in both scenarios. “It doesn’t matter, because in the long term, even in the medium term, gold and silver are going to multiply from where they are,” he said. He stressed that the developments of 1987 could play out again in 2026.

“We could have a 1987 moment. That was the best buying opportunity of the entire bull market. You can’t see it on a long-term chart. The crash of 1987, it really did seem like the world was falling in upon itself, and yet when you look back over that chart, you can’t see it. Certainly a person of my vintage would need glasses to be able to perceive it. It’s that minute,” he said.

Kalpan’s price target on gold prices is the boldest ever made by any analyst. A 1,000% rise from here would test the limits of the most sought-after commodity. Though it has risen more than 150% in the last five years, a 1,000% rise has never occurred. The target defies market sentiments and stands on its own. Whether it will reach $50,000 or not, only time will tell.
