Shortly after El Salvador ’s lawmakers voted in favor of adopting bitcoin as a legal tender. McDonald’s has started accepting Bitcoin payments. This is a move that is likely to attract more Bitcoin holders to transact with them.
A client was surprise when he walked into a McDonald’s in El Salvador to see if he could pay for his breakfast with Bitcoin. He wasn’t expecting the response he got.
To his surprise. The cashier printed a ticket with the QR that took him to a webpage with a lightning invoice.
He was super excited, and he took to Twitter:
“Just walked to McDonald’s in San Salvador to see if I could pay for my breakfast with bitcoin, tbh fully expecting to be told no. But low and Behold, they printed a ticket with QR that took me to a webpage with a lightning invoice, and now I’m enjoying my Desayuno traditional!”
El Salvador has been utilizing bitcoin to help its population living abroad send remittances back home. Especially in the wake of a worldwide financial crisis.
President Nayib Bukele said that while U.S dollars will continue as legal tender in the country. He hopes cryptocurrencies’ benefits and capabilities can be used by citizens worldwide. This is through innovative technologies such as blockchain and smart contracts.
