BRICS member India has made it clear that it does not want its neighboring country Pakistan to join the alliance. India and Pakistan are arch-enemies and have remained in conflict since the partition in 1947. Pakistan aiding and abetting terrorists to infiltrate India and attack the country is what makes the Modi government skeptical about inducting its neighboring country. Relations between India and Pakistan are in muddy waters with no sight of mending them soon.

Pakistan joining BRICS is the last thing that India wants to happen to the expanding alliance. India is prepared to thwart Pakistan’s attempt to join BRICS and be a part of the bloc. Pakistan’s government is seeking the help of Russia to be inducted into the grouping this year in 2024.

“Of course, we will resist Pakistan’s candidature for BRICS as its character as a grouping for emerging market economies shouldn’t be lost.” The government official added, “If we take all and sundry, then that character will be lost”.

The official also questioned Pakistan’s contribution to BRICS, saying that the country will not bring anything to the table. He explained that Pakistan brings nothing but trouble to the BRICS alliance. “Pakistan will not contribute anything to BRICS and political issues will creep in. Though bilateral issues are not allowed to be discussed in BRICS forums,” he said.

“Since a decision on adding new members is based on a consensus, we are confident of thwarting Pakistan’s move,” the official summed it up to Business Standard. In conclusion, Pakistan might not be allowed to join BRICS as India will stop them from being inducted.
