Celebrities endorsing cryptocurrencies or the market, in general, is no big news. However, Reese Witherspoon’s latest tweet regarding cryptocurrencies got the actress drowning in criticism.
Over the years, the crypto-verse welcomed an array of celebrities with open arms. While some endorsed certain cryptocurrencies, a few others rolled out their very own assets. The NFT wave, however, did not spare anyone. An array of celebrities wanted in on the NFT fun. But, entering the crypto-verse had its own perils. Reese Witherspoon confused all her Twitter followers with a crypto-related tweet.
Earlier this week, Witherspoon elaborated on digitalization and tweeted,
“In the (near) future, every person will have a parallel digital identity. Avatars, crypto wallets, digital goods will be the norm. Are you planning for this?”
This tweet ticked off many of her followers, particularly the crypto community. Several flooded Witherspoon’s comment section and pointed out that the crypto-verse was more than a decade old.
Reese Witherspoon the latest “crypto bro?”
The Hollywood star’s tweet created quite an uproar. While some outrightly urged her to steer clear of the crypto-verse, a few others were calling out her late realization. One Twitter user said, “Reese Witherspoon becoming a crypto bro was not on my 2022 bingo card.”
The phrase ethical advertising grew to popularity this week after reality star Kim Kardashian and boxing champion, Floyd Mayweather Jr. was slapped with lawsuits for promoting an allegedly scammy crypto token. Despite avoiding crypto advertisements, Reese Witherspoon encountered backlash from every corner.
Witherspoon wasn’t the only one to face the wrath of the crypto community. Matt Damon’s Crypto.com advertisement was labeled “cringe” by many. Comparing both, these instances, prominent writer Zack Davisson tweeted,
“A weird thing about Reese Witherspoon and Matt Damon is realizing that no matter how much money and fame you have, you will always take another paycheck. Neither of them NEEDS to advertise Crypto. But they can’t say no to the check. Unless you are Tom from MySpace.”
