Tech Giant Sony Targets Metaverse through PlayStationVR2

The metaverse expansion counties to be a central theme in 2022 and big corporations do not want to miss out. Recently, Sony Corporation joined a host of other companies who attempt to combine innovation and technology within the metaverse space.

At the CES technology conference in Las Vegas, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan confirmed the launch of their latest virtual reality headset called PlayStation VR2. According to the PlayStation Blog, new the PlayStation VR2 will include enhanced 3D Audio and enhanced Visual Fidelity, including 4K high definition resolution and a 110-degree field of view, and will only be available on PS5 consoles.

The latest headset is an upgrade to its predecessor “PlayStation VR” and promises to deliver a more immersive experience to its users. The blog post read “PlayStation VR2 takes VR gaming to a whole new level, enabling a greater sense of presence and allowing players to escape into game worlds like never before.”

The announcement comes at a time where corporations such as Oculus, HTC, and Microsoft are undertaking VR projects to cash in on the “metaverse” eruption. Oculus already has a headstart after Facebook’s virtual reality gaming platform “Horizon World” went live a few weeks ago. Currently, the game is accessible through Oculus’ VR headsets.

Meanwhile, Taiwan-based consumer electronics firm HTC, which competes in the VR vertical through its “VIVE” headsets, has proved how profitable the metaverse frenzy can be. A statement released on Thursday showed that HTC’s December sales were up 24.4% from a month earlier due to increased shipments of its latest VR gadget, the portable Vive Flow.

From buying property, playing games, and interacting with other users, the metaverse space is filled with endless possibilities. Recently, tech mogul Bill Gates spoke about how 2022 could be revolutionary for workplaces as well. He predicted that the metaverse would host office meetings within the next two to three years.

Considering Sony’s cutting edge technology and its extensive user base, the metaverse has now received a gigantic entry into the space. It will be interesting to see how the tech race shapes up in heading forward in 2022.
