OpenAI’s viral chatbot sensation has taken the tech world by storm and was seemingly destined to create competition. Now, as Google announced the development of its very own chatbot, we break down what could be a battle for AI supremacy, ChatGPT vs Bard.

The former has blown away users with its impressive capabilities and is a sign of progression in AI tech. The latter is a newly-integrated system to answer the demand from consumers. Moreover, both are provided by two of the biggest tech companies on the planet — Microsoft and Google.

How are they Similar?

ChatGPT and Bard are both best described as generative AI, albeit very advanced forms of the programs than what we’ve typically seen. The two are able to provide rather sophisticated responses to varied prompts, and both programs function in much the same way.

Users input a question, request, or prompt, and the AI chatbots will provide a response. They are essentially different versions of the same pursuit: to continue to orchestrate the progression of artificial intelligence and decipher the ways in which it can be more valuable to humankind.

Another primary similarity is in their seemingly endless applicative potential. Not just because of their technology, but because of the investment made in their development. Both Microsoft and Google have big plans for AI systems and are engaging in an AI arms race that should grant them both viability and relevancy as the industry moves forward.

Subsequently, both companies have hopes of integrating the technology into their search engines. Microsoft seeks ChatGPT as a potential benefit to its Bing search engine. A development that could propel it as a competitor to the immensely successful Google search engine.

How are they different?

A combination of the technologies relative youth, and there only being two major entities competing for supremacy, makes the differences rather distinct. Conversely, Reuters has noted that the only true difference discovered is in Bard’s ability to infuse its response with recent events.

Undoubtedly, this is due to the plethora of data Bard has access to because of Alphabet, and Google. Moreover, Reuters notes that where Bard draws on its information from the internet, ChatGPT only maintains data access until 2021.

Another key difference is in the language model used for both ChatGPT and Bard. Consequently, both generative AI systems utilize various language models, that feed into another facet that exemplifies their differences.

LaMDA vs GPT

Bard utilized LaMDA or Language Model for Dialogue Applications. The AI generates text that is so impressive, it was reported that one company engineer called the technology sentient; a claim that was eventually completely dismissed.

Conversely, OpenAI’s ChatGPT utilizes the research firms Generative Pre-Trained Transformer or GPT. It was first released in 2020, with the 3.5 version of the language model that concluded its training at the end of last year as the foundational technology of the chatbot.

Currently, both generative AI systems are impressive progressions in the field, but are far from flawless. However, what makes them so interesting is the financial backing that could propel them, and the AI industry, forward immensely. Bard is currently available only to testers, but will reportedly be more widely viable in the coming weeks.
