Bitcoin Donations to Ukraine military starts mounting as Russia invades

The geopolitical tensions between Ukraine and Russia has has been escalating lately. Amidst the uncertainty prevalent, cryptocurrency donations have poured in for the Ukrainian army as Russian forces continue to attack the country.

Come Back Alive, a Ukrainian Non-Governmental Organization [NGO] that raises crypto funds for the Ukrainian army, has received more than $400,000 worth of digital tokens over the past day. Tom Robinson, Chief Scientist and Co-Founder of blockchain and crypto analytics firm Elliptic brought to light the same.

The average amount donated is around $1,000 to $2,000, and the group has received at least 317 individual donations in the past two days.

As per Jess Symington, Head of Research at Elliptic, the incoming donations “haven’t stopped,” and the firm expects the number to further increase going forward. She also added that pro-Ukraine groups and pro-crypto communities on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook have aided in amassing donations. In fact, posts on these platforms have listed Come Back Alive’s wallet address among other payment methods.

As per data from Blockchain.com, Come Back Alive’s Bitcoin wallet has cumulatively received more than 25.46 BTC worth around $980,528.79. The said address has been active since August last year, but the vast majority of the 1,022 recorded transactions have taken place in only this month. In fact, transactions over the past 48-hours have single-handedly managed to swell up the aggregative figure.

Per the organization’s website,

“All funds received by the Charitable Foundation are used exclusively for the needs of the army.”

The site also linked a live spreadsheet encapsulating transaction details.

Trading volume registered on Ukrainian crypto exchange Kuna has ballooned up to 4x since Russia invaded it. As per CoinGecko’s data, Kuna’s trading volume revolved around $1.4 million during the early hours of Thursday but managed to peak at $4.799 million by Friday. Nonetheless, the was seen sitting under$4 million at the time of press.

Additionally, Bitcoin was also seen trading at a premium on the Ukrainian exchange. At the time of press, Bitcoin was priced $38,588.07 globally but was seen exchanging hands at $40,819.73 in Kuna.
