Bitcoiner Kidnapped & Killed for $200K in Bitcoin

The cryptocurrency industry is home to several ill-doers, but most of this comes under the cybercrime category. But things were taking a different turn after a 29-year-old Bitcoiner was kidnapped and murdered in Kyiv, Ukraine. A recent report highlights that four men between the ages of 24 and 29 killed the foreign national Bitcoiner who was in Kyiv.

The Bitcoiner allegedly faced coercion to transfer an incredible 7 million Ukrainian hryvnias worth of Bitcoin at an abandoned building, as reported by the Kyiv Police. Around midnight on July 29, the man was assaulted, and the officials verified that the attack was planned. The man was killed by strangulation, and his body was buried in a jungle after he transferred the Bitcoin. In addition, the suspects in custody went on to convert the stolen Bitcoin into United States dollars [USD] and euros. They even altered the number plates of the car they used in the crime.

The police added,

“Information about the man’s abduction came to the capital’s police around midnight. Residents of a house in Solomyansk district heard screams and saw several unknown people beating and forcibly putting a man in a car.”

Prosecutors intend to file several charges against the arrested individuals. This includes charges for homicide, robbery, and unlawful deprivation of liberty carried out by an organized group, along with crime concealment. Furthermore, a life term in jail might be imposed on the suspects for their act against the Bitcoiner.

Not a First…

While hacks and scams are more prevalent, murders aren’t far behind. Over the past two years, there have been several suspicious deaths of individuals part of the industry. In a recent guide, Jameson Lopp highlighted the importance of security. Lopp added,

’’Privacy is an important aspect of security. While it’s not a complete solution to securing one’s wealth, it’s a good strategy to include in your security toolkit. The general premise is that if criminals are less aware of you, they are less likely to target you.”
