The biggest hack in the history of crypto unraveled last week. The couple behind the infamous Bitfinex hack came to light and were swiftly nabbed by the Department of Justice [DOJ]. While the wife managed to secure bail, the husband was sent to pre-trial detention.
The crypto community was filled with a slew of emotions following the capture of Ilya Lichtenstein and his wife Heather Morgan. The DOJ discovered $3.6 million worth of Bitcoin that was part of money laundering. The couple’s Valentine’s Day was quashed after the Chief Judge at Columbia’s Federal District Court, Beryl A. Howell sent Ilya Lichtenstein to pre-trial detention.
The Bitfinex hacker was charged with motivation to flee and the chief judge even ruled that Lichtenstein had the resources to do so. Therefore he needed to stay in detention. In the meantime, his wife, comedic rapper Morgan was given bail on a $3 million bond.
The couple’s lawyer, however, argued and suggested that they had no intention of doing so. The lawyer pointed out the plans as well as the family ties of the Bitfinex hackers and denied all the accusations.
Bitfinex hack: Morgan’s bail influenced by her health problems?
The self-proclaimed comedic rapper, Heather Morgan was tried to be portrayed as the naive wife who had no clue about her husband’s doings. The Bitfinex couple’s lawyer put forth the list of health issues that she was suffering from.
A recent breast surgery along with asthma was discussed in court. Morgan also suffered an asthma attack during her time in jail which is said to have aided in her early release.
Additionally, it was brought to light that she was prepping for in-vitro fertilization before the investigation. Speaking about the same, the lawyer pointed out that this was the only possibility of them having children.
Several speculated that these reasons could have urged the court to release the comedic rapper on bail.
