Argentina will decline the invitation to join the BRICS bloc under President Javier Milei, according to his incoming top diplomat. “We won’t go into the BRICS,” Diana Mondino, Milei’s pick for Foreign Affairs Minister, wrote on the platform X Thursday.

Argentina was one of the final countries that had yet to decide on joining the BRICS bloc after its founding nations decided to expand in August. The presidential election in the South American country ultimately dictated Argentina’s future with BRICS. Speaking to journalists at an event in Buenos Aires, Mondino also shared doubts about the value of the group. It is important to note that two of Argentina’s top commercial partners are Brazil and China.
“If the BRICS are already our primary trading partners, what’s the difference?” she says.
President Milei hopes to align Argentina’s foreign policy with the interests of the US. The latest decision not to join BRICS confirms a significant policy change for the country. The decision moves Argentina away from efforts to strengthen emerging countries blocks like BRICS.

Under former President Alberto Fernandez, Argentina was primed to join the BRICS bloc after being invited by the group.
