France must join the BRICS alliance, said the grandson of the former French President General Charles de Gaulle. His grandson, Pierre de Gaulle, explained that France must rely on the multipolar world and be available to countries beyond the West. This comes at a time when US President Donald Trump repeatedly hit out at European countries for not financing the war, and also imposing tariffs and kick-starting trade wars among its allies.
De Gaulle said that France joining BRICS would make it an interstate union and ensure a democratic balance of power. If that wasn’t enough, he went ahead and said that France must completely reconsider its relations with the US. He added that the US is becoming aggressive and unpredictable in its attempt to control the world. The statement is a stark hit back at Trump and the foreign policies emerging from the White House.
France must “regain its role” by joining BRICS and severing ties with the US, he said. European allies are increasingly expressing discomfort with the policies of the US under Trump. From tariffs to trade wars and threatening dire consequences if they don’t finance Ukraine with a budget in its war with Russia, European allies have seen it all. Several leaders from the European Union have repeatedly hit out at the US for its aggressive stance.

Will France Join BRICS?

French President Emmanuel Macron was keen to attend the BRICS summit in 2023 in Russia’s Kazan. However, China and Russia blocked him from attending the event, citing that he could sabotage the summit. Developing countries were skeptical of the West during that period as de-dollarization was in full swing.
In January, Macron said at the World Economic Forum in Davos that France will build bridges with BRICS. He also called other European Union countries to join the bandwagon. Macron stressed that there is an imbalance in the G7 bloc and Europe must stabilize with developing nations.
