Square Powers First Bitcoin Payment at Compass Coffee in DC

Bitcoin payment adoption reached a milestone as Compass Coffee became the first merchant to process a Bitcoin transaction through Square Terminal in Washington, DC. The DC coffee shop completed the historic payment using Square Terminal, marking a significant moment for crypto transactions in retail. Square’s new Bitcoin wallet solution enables businesses to accept Bitcoin payment adoption with zero processing fees.

Compass Coffee successfully processed the first-ever Square Terminal Bitcoin payment at its DC location. The coffee shop tested Lightning payments from 10 different wallets during the demonstration, and all crypto transactions completed instantly.

Michael Haft, co-founder of Compass Coffee, stated:

“We tested Lightning payments from 10 different wallets—fast, reliable, and honestly pretty fun. All went through instantly.”

The DC coffee shop used Square Terminal to accept payments from multiple wallet providers including Cash App, Wallet of Satoshi, Strike, Zeus LN, and Phoenix Wallet. The testing also included a self-custodial node, demonstrating the flexibility of Bitcoin payment adoption through Square’s system.

Square Terminal Enables Zero-Fee Bitcoin Transactions

Jack Dorsey’s Square introduced the Bitcoin wallet solution to help local businesses accept BTC payments without transaction fees. Bitcoin Magazine reported:

Compass Coffee operates 27 locations across the Washington area, and the company demonstrated Square Bitcoin Payments during DC Fintech week. Miles Suter encouraged broader adoption of Bitcoin payment adoption at the DC coffee shop location, urging community members to experience the technology firsthand.

The Square Terminal integration will deal with issues of the cost and speed of transactions that limited crypto transactions in retail chains. The Lightning Network allows immediate payments and therefore adoption of Bitcoin payments is viable when it comes to daily shopping at establishments such as Compass Coffee.
