More than 40 countries have expressed interest in joining the BRICS group of nations. It is not clear just how many countries may be allowed to join the bloc upon expansion. Venezuela is not the first country to officially apply to join BRICS.

While no official list has been published, dozens of countries have shown interest in the past. These include Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Iran, and Cuba. Expansion will be on the menu of discussion at the summit at the end of August in Johannesburg, from August 22-24th.
