Gold prices struggled to maintain their position above the $4,100 mark since March this year, as negotiations in the Middle East remained sketchy. Add to this the rising oil prices, which made the XAU/USD index trade cautiously, with barely any price spurts. However, things changed in August, as the precious metal spiked 7% in the last three weeks. The rebound made prices climb above the $4,300 level and remains on the greener side of the spectrum.

How High Can Gold Prices Go in 2026? Wells Fargo Provides a Target

Leading global investment bank Wells Fargo has predicted that gold prices could end 2026 trading at $4,900. The XAU/USD index is currently trading at the $4,342 level on Wednesday with a brief surge of 0.18%. It just came close to being in the green year-to-date at -0.37%. The investment bank wrote in a note to clients that the glittery metal will see a bounce-back hereon. They also urged clients to take an entry position into the commodity, citing the market’s positive outlook.
The bank also highlighted that central banks have barely stopped accumulating the commodity in 2026. This is what led to gold prices stabilizing at $4,000 and not seeing a drastic fall below the range. “We believe these same geopolitical and market uncertainties reinforced gold’s role and supported the rebound in central bank purchases during the second quarter,” read the note to clients. Wells Fargo also mentioned that gold could be the top performer in the commodity segment by the end of 2026.
According to Wells Fargo, gold prices have a shot of rising by another 13% until December 2026. The glittery metal has remained under the spotlight since February 2022, after the Russia-Ukraine war broke out. Central banks have been relentlessly accumulating the metal and diversifying their reserves. The demand is yet to cool down, and even retail traders are betting heavily on its prospects. The ones who invested in 2022 have already doubled their money in 2026.
