Throughout the last year, the BRICS economic alliance grew noticeably in its geopolitical impact. Indeed, most of its ascension was a result of a groundbreaking announcement that took place at its annual gathering. With the new year upon us, we answer when and where the BRICS summit will be held in 2024.
Last year, the BRICS Summit took place in South Africa from August 22nd through the 23rd. Moreover, South Africa hosted the summit as it had received the chairmanship of the economic alliance for that calendar year. However, that position shifts annually, and the current holder of that title is set to host the coming year’s event.
During the 2023 iteration of the event, the BRICS bloc announced a landmark expansion effort. Its first such initiative since 2001, the alliance invited six countries to join its growing collective. Those included, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Argentina, and The United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Five of those nations opted to join the bloc, with only Argentina rejecting the invitation. Moreover, its de-dollarization initiatives made massive strides following the collective meeting.
Amid the event’s undeniable importance, let’s explore when and where the BRICS summit will take place in 2024, and just what that could mean for the events unfolding.

As stated previously, the location of the BRICS Summit depends greatly on the chairman during that calendar year. For the upcoming event, Russia is set to be the location of the BRICS Summit in 2024.
South Africa held the position and hosted the 2023 BRICS Summit, which was the 15th consecutive iteration of the event. Alternatively, China was the 2022 BRICS host and chaired the 14th rendition of the summit. Subsequently, Russia is poised to be the host of this year’s event, following its acceptance of the chairmanship.
This will be Russia’s fourth time hosting the event since 2009 when it hosted the inaugural BRICS summit. Thereafter, they hosted the event in 2015 and again in 2020. However, the latter event was held virtually due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In December of last year, Putin stated that the upcoming BRICS Summit of 2024 would take place in the Russian city of Kazan. Moreover, he discussed the prevailing focus of the event, highlighting the theme of a “fair” world order.

Although the location of every annual BRICS Summit is dependent on the chairmanship, the where is a little more tricky. Throughout the history of the event, it has taken place at a few different times in the year.
The inaugural BRICS Summit hosted by Russia took place in June 2009. Subsequently, the two following summits took place in April 2010 and 2011 and were hosted by India and China respectively.
Thereafter, different BRICS Summits throughout the years have taken place in March, July, September, November, and June in consecutive years dating back to the very first one. Interestingly, the 2023 BRICS summit was the first time the event was held in August.
However, the BRICS Summit in 2024 is expected to be held in October of 2024, according to officials. Moreover, this will mark the second time in the history of the economic alliance that the event took place in October. The last occurrence took place in 2016, with India as the host of the event.
Conversely, the event should be one of the most important in the bloc’s history. Following the landmark expansion announcement of 2023’s summit, many expect a similar milestone development. Further expansion is likely, with discussions on native currency development rumored to be in play.
