Axie Infinity is an online game for the Windows, Android, macOS, and iOS platforms. The game has its roots in Vietnam and allows for single-player or PvP (Player versus Player) gaming modes.
The game uses non-fungible token (N.F.T.s) entities that allow gamers to buy, sell and breed their gaming entities of choice. These entities are “axies,” and any new player needs to buy at least three of them before starting the game. Moreover, gamers get tokens for the battles their axies fight.
As of June 2021, a CNBC report on Axie Infinity did show that the game continues to be a significant source of income for some people in the Philippines. And as a result, more people are now identifying as gamers.
Developer of Axie Infinity
Trung Nguyen founded Axie Infinity with a group of friends in 2018. He is currently the C.E.O. at Axie Infinity and a crypto expert.
In 2012, he was working at a startup (Lozi) as a chief technical officer, which, at one point, was popular with over 8 million users. However, in 2015 he left the company to join Anduin Transactions as a software engineer.
While he was at Anduin Transactions, the Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies wave sweeping across the world and its industries. Quick profits and scams were going all around, but Nguyen was not interested in this. He identified something different- CyptoKitties.
CryptoKitties, a blockchain-powered game, was one of the first crypto-based games in which players could buy and sell virtual cats. Nguyen did love this game. He did invest a lot in the game, that at some point, he had 1,000 virtual cats under his name.
It is this fascination that led him to conceptualize and begin to create his own game. Working with various friends for several months, Axie Infinity began to take shape. And slowly, his little group of friends evolved into an indie company by the name of Sky Mavis that currently runs the game on the Ethereum blockchain with the help of Ronin.
Notably, the founding members, namely, Larsen as the C.O.O, Nguyen Thanh Trung (C.E.O.), Doan Minh Tu (Art and Game Director), Viet Anh Ho (C.T.O.), and Jeffrey Samuel Kim Zirlin (Growth Lead), are the people still running the company.
