The king of retail Walmart has fallen making Amazon overtake the giant in revenue for the first time in 2025. Walmart had dominated the retail brick-and-mortar sector for decades but Amazon retail outperformed the giant, according to the latest data. Amazon’s net sales for the fourth quarter jumped 10% reaching $187.8 billion in Q4 of 2024. This figure exceeds Walmart’s net sales for the same period of $180 billion, making it fall to the second spot. The development could make Amazon stock (AMZN) start positively on Monday’s opening bell making it remain in the green.

Amazon stock (AMZN) closed Friday’s bell in the red by dipping nearly 10 points and losing more than 4% in value. AMZN is now trading at the $229 level but could experience a spurt in price after Monday’s opening bell. The robust growth and outperforming Walmart in the retail business could push the stock’s price further in the charts today.

Financial experts predict that Amazon stock has the potential to deliver results in 2025 and sustainably scale up the indices. The diversification of Amazon retail products made the Jeff Bezos-run firm outpace its rival Walmart. “While Amazon is a powerhouse in retail, it is a diversified group that draws its sales from a wide variety of areas,” said Neil Saunders, MD at GlobalData Retail.

In addition, Amazon has spread its wings across various sectors making its stock gain an added advantage. “Given the growth trajectories of the two companies, it has always been on the cards that Amazon would overtake Walmart’s revenue at some point,” said Saunders.
