OpenAI Exec Compares ChatGPT API’s Fee With CryptoPunk Alien NFT

OpenAI officially released the ChatGPT API a day ago to allow developers to integrate the technology into their applications. According to the official announcement, the interface grants developed access to cutting-edge language and speech-to-text capabilities.

As far as pricing is concerned, the new ChatGPT API will cost $0.002 per 1000 tokens. That, according to the company, is 10x cheaper than its existing GPT-3.5 models. According to the pricing page, tokens can be equated to “pieces of words,” where 1,000 tokens are about 750 words.” Whisper API’s price is, however, different. Whisper is basically a speech-to-text model and is priced at $0.006 per minute. 

ChatGPT API’s $0.002 per 1000 tokens translates to merely “$2 per million tokens.” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman re-emphasized that on Twitter on Thursday, Mar. 2. Well, it was just not it. In another subsequent tweet, the executive went on to draw parallels with the price of NFTs.

10 trillion ChatGPT tokens’ price = CryptoPunk 5822’s value

Recently, Punk 5822 was sold for a whopping 8,000 ETH [worth around $23–24 million at the time of sale]. The NFT is one of the only nine Aliens in Larva Labs’ iconic CryptoPunks collection. Deepak Thapliyal, the CEO of blockchain infrastructure company Chain, bought the collectible. Shortly after, he tweeted about the same thing.

Comparing ChatGPT API’s price with that of the said NFT, Sam Altman tweeted, “for the feb 2022 price of one alien token, you can have 10,000,000,000,000 ChatGPT tokens!!

To clarify, there is no official ChatGPT cryptocurrency token at the moment. However, with its popularity rising, perpetrators have been taking undue advantage. Blockchain security and analysis firm PeckShield recently detected “dozens of newly created” BingChatGPT cryptocurrency tokens.

Out of the ones identified, it revealed that three were likely honeypots and two carried quite high sales taxes. Furthermore, PeckShield alerted users by bringing to light that two of them have already dropped over 99%.
