T-Mobile parent company and well-known telecommunications firm Deutsche Telekom has announced its plan to begin mining Bitcoin. Indeed, the company has unveiled its plans to begin mining the leading cryptocurrency during a BTC Prague conference that took place in June.

Dirk Röder, the head of Web3 infrastructure and solutions at the company, stated, “We will engage in digital monetary photosynthesis soon.” Moreover, the development comes as US mining firms reached a record $22.8 billion market cap this month.

The Bitcoin mining sector has been confronted with a tumultuous few years. Indeed, it has fought off bull markets, and 2024’s long-awaited Bitcoin halving, which decreased BTC rewards by half. However, that reality hasn’t stopped Europe’s largest telecom provider from getting in on the sector.

T-Mobile’s parent company, Deutsche Telekom, has announced that it will officially begin mining Bitcoin. The announcement was made in a recent appearance at BTC Prague last week and is a monumental development for the company’s continued participation in the cryptocurrency industry.

“Since 2023, we [have been] running a Bitcoin node and we are running Bitcoin Lightning nodes as well,” Dirk Röder told attendees. “With a heart full of… pride, I would like to let you in on a little secret; we will engage in ‘digital monetary photosynthesis soon.”

When asked to clarify, Röder revealed the company “will” be mining the leading cryptocurrency. The decision is part of a growing interest in the sector dating back to 2022. Then, the firm announced it would be supporting Ethereum by running validator nodes.

The firm also began running a validation node for Polygon, Polkadot, and Celo. That participation has also led to investments from Deutsche Telekom into these various networks’ native tokens. The Bitcoin mining update is the latest point of expansion into digital assets.
