In response to US President Donald Trump’s pause of his Liberation Day tariff plan, the European Union (EU) has agreed to pause its retaliatory tariff on US goods for 90 days. Indeed, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed its alignment with a halt as it looks to negotiate a new trade deal with the United States.

Trump announced sweeping global tariffs last week, issuing a baseline 10% import tax on all trade partners. Indeed, the plan was crafted to seek balanced trade but wreaked havoc on the US stock market. In response to the plan, the EU agreed to issue its own 25% tariff on the US. However, following Trump’s freeze, the collective has responded in kind.

EU Pauses Retaliatory Tariffs, Looks to Negotiate Trade Deal With US

The global economy faced unexpected headwinds this month when the United States announced a sweeping economic policy that affected nearly every country on the planet. Indeed, the Trump administration issued a global tariff as it sought to bring these nations back to the negotiating table. In response, a host of nations responded with their own set of retaliatory tariffs.

Just over a week after it was announced, the administration has announced a pause on the policy. Moreover, it has pushed those countries to do the same. Specifically, the European Union has announced it will institute a 90-day pause to its retaliatory tariffs on US goods.

The move comes just a day after the bloc agreed to the 25% import duty on US goods. “We took note of the announcement by President Trump,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said. “We want to give negotiations a chance,” she added.

“If negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will kick in. Preparatory work on further countermeasures continues. As I have said before, all options remain on the table,” the president concluded in a statement Thursday.
